Genre painting or genre scene painting depicts aspects of everyday life or portrays ordinary people engaged in common activities. Animal painting can be classed in this category. Since the sixteenth century and the Flemish painter Brueghel, the genre has been extremely popular. Portraiture, an equally ancient art form, has recently stirred renewed interest.

Genre painting - Dutch 1900-1910's
Oil on canvas; set in the original frame. Overall size is 22 x 25.6".
A woman walking a country road aligned with high poplars, accompanied by lapdogs and seemingly awaiting an imminent arrival. Depicted is the flat landscape, characteristic of the environs of the Hague in the Netherlands. In the distance there are some elevations, presumably the overgrown dune elevations of Wassenaar,
forming a natural barrier against the sea. A beautifully composed picture in a style dear to the artist. Here right a similarly rendered picture, albeit smaller and on board but giving off the same sensitivity and atmosphere and showing the Gravenstraat in The Hague, sold at Christie's in 2006 for $43,000.
Pieter Florentius Nicolaas Jacobus Arntzenius (1864–1925) was a Dutch painter, water-colourist, illustrator and printmaker. He is considered a representative of the younger generation of the Hague School.
The turbulent sky and the tall, contorted poplars give the composition its particular tension and interest.
Condition: excellent.
