On this page you'll find landscapes in a variety of media. The famed art critic John Ruskin held landscape painting for the "chief artistic creation of the nineteenth century". Since that time landscape has been the most popular of genres. The still life, painted with more or less realism and depicting inanimate subject matter, is going much further back and has always had great favour among collectors.

Original oil painting, second quarter 20th century, signed Pieter Stobbaerts
Inundated landscape - Belgian (1930's)
An oil by the well listed Belgian painter Pieter Stobbaerts (1865-1948). Nicely assorted vintage frame. Overall size is 18.5 x 21.9"
We haven't been able to identify this particular landscape; for sure executed on one of Stobbaerts travels abroad. It seems to have been been painted at a coastline during low tide and one would think somewhere near or along the Dover/Calais chalk mountain range, if it wasn't for the immensity of the flat landscape. We are intrigued and would be happy to have your suggestions.
Supposedly coastal heathland and marshes against a steep wall of bare limestone cliffs spanning the horizon. Materials: oil on card . Condition: excellent.

River landscape - French (1930's)
A lush landscape painted on card and set in a gilt period frame. Should date from the thirties. Overall size is 14.1 x 19.7”.
Another exquisite oil by Paul Chanéac, a listed artist from the south of France, this time the landscape depicted is more nordic, maybe the Vosges in the North-East. While n° 273 La ville blanche below is concentrating on cloud fomation, here it is water reflection that seems to have interested the painter.

Two Italian watercolours - British (1900's)
Two subtle watercolours by the same artist and probably executed at the same moment. Both inscribed 'Lago di Garda 1912'. Two different techniques and two different frames. The overall size of the sepia wash at the left is 7.9 x 13.4"; of the watercolour on the right 8.7 x 16.5"
This superb pair makes up for a small but delicate wall composition. The imposing Garda lake in northern Italy is one of the most beautiful spots in Europe. The technique and the provenance is behind the presumption of a British artist.
Two panoramic views of the Garda lake in Northern Italy, annotated and dated 1912
Materials: watercolor on paper. Sepia wash on paper. Original period mounts and frames. Protective glazing. Condition: excellent for their age, perfectly preserved and kept. Colours intact

Original oil painting, second quarter 20th century, signed Stoppani
Pyrenees mountainscape - French (1950's)
A vivid landscape painting on board from the late 40's-early 50's, signed by the artist and set in a sober period frame. Overall size is 17 x 21”.
A work by Maurice Stoppani (1921-?), as confirmed by a family member, a French artist known for his landscapes. Depicted here is a mountain range from the Pyrenees; the backside annotation pinpoints the location as 'mountainwards of Cauterets', a well-known town in the area. Interesting is the cubistic rendering of vegetation and architecture. Very much in the footsteps of Cezanne.
